Roy The Professional Wrestler

Upon arriving in Quebec, I enrolled in French immersion classes in Laprairie. Someone told me that finding employment would be difficult without the ability to converse in French. But I thought, “why not find employment where French was not a major requirement and paid well?”

I was already into Bodybuilding for my “Doorman image,” which paid the bills, so when I was invited to enter the Grand Prix Wrestling training camp. Of course, I jumped at the offer.

I spent about 10-12 months at the training school. During this time, I got roughed up. Maurice “Mad Dog” Vachon, Gilles “The Fish” Poisson, and Joe Leduc beat me to a pulp but taught me a lot.

I did a lot of street fighting in the gym because I had to learn to protect myself at any level in any country.

About six months into my training, the late Edouardo Carpentier came to me and said, “Kid, now I will teach you the technical fundamentals of our profession.” It was then that I learned how to make everything look easy. My physique changed with the hour after hour of mat grappling, and my cardio (muscular endurance) went sky high.

Approximately 3 months later, Yvon Robert (the CEO and matchmaker) came to see me at the gym, shook my hand and said, “Congratulations, kid, you have made it. You are now a professional Wrestler, You have a match tomorrow for television in Sherbrooke with Bull Gregory. Good luck”.Immediately I felt hungry, full, hot, cold and nauseous all at the same time. I did not sleep that night

The next day, I lost my very first fight after 18 minutes. I was so encouraged by so many people, which was fine, but I was already hooked and ready to see my next opponent. After that, I went on to a very well-travelled career in Canada, Germany, Austria, Australia and the USA. Because of pro wrestling, I get to see every province of our beautiful Canada.

I had to consider myself very blessed, having been in Canada less than 24 months and already seen more of our country than most born here.

A few years later, after my last tour in Germany, I left the sport to take up Bodybuilding full-time. I won the Canadian Bodybuilding Championships (Mr. Canada overall) the year I restarted my bodybuilding career.
